Storing the clubs… Season comes to an end for area small school linksters at regionals

For local small school golfers who made the cut for regional play during last week’s district tournament, it all came down to an opportunity to either record the needed low score to qualify for state or put the wraps on another golf season.
Even though some of the local golfers had a good day on the links at The Links Country Club in Greeneville, unfortunately none of them made the cut to advance to the 2020 state tournament.
In team play on the boys side, the Hampton Bulldogs finished the day with a team-total of 372.
The Bulldogs saw Josh Owens lead the charge with an 87 firing a a 42 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine to close out a solid season.
Avery Hill carded a 93 for his 18-hole round as he shot 49 for his first nine holes and then came alive on the final nine to close out with a 44.
Parker Henry was one stroke off Hill’s total as Henry finished his day with a 94 playing consistently throughout the day as he carded a 46 over his opening nine holes and then came back with a 48 to close out the back nine holes of play.
RJ Tolley and Jonah Gabel closed out the action for Hampton as Tolley came into the club house with a 98 while Gabel recorded a 18-hole total of 109.
Individually, Unaka’s Gavin Seigfried recorded a round of 150 as the Ranger fired even rounds of 75 over both the front and back nine to end his season.
In girls play, the Unaka Lady Rangers made a strong bid for a trip to state as the Lady Rangers came up nine shots short of being in the mix as Claiborne Co. took the team title with a 190 and South Greene collected second with a 235.
Unaka finished out the day with a 244 while Hampton’s team score came in at 263.
Lady Rangers Sadie Shoun and Macy Ensor shot identical 122s for the 18 holes of play to account for their team’s score of 244.
Hampton received a round of 127 from Rylie McClain while Macy Henry carded a 136 for the Lady Bulldogs.
Congratulations to all teams and players for their hard work in what was a challenging year from the first tee shot.
