There are Democrats in Carter County working to make change.
This is what Melissa Fiero, chair of the Carter County Democratic Party, wants the public to know.
“There are Democrats working in Carter County who are working to make change for the better,” said Fiero. “We have good candidates you can get behind and support.”
The organization held its annual picnic on Saturday. The original event was scheduled for last month, but was postponed due to rain. At the event, people were urged to follow social distancing, wear masks and use sanitization (a station was provided for this).
“I think considering we are in the middle of a pandemic, and we were very specific about safety measures in place, we had a good turnout,” said Fiero. “People are excited about this election and excited about our candidates in Tennessee and locally.”
Attendees were urged to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy some BBQ, which was available for preorder and purchase from Hokie Smokie’s BBQ, while hearing the visions of state and local candidates.
As the picnic began on Saturday, Fiero took to the stage.
“Today you are going to hear from Tennesseans who stepped up and said, ‘I care, I wanna help, I wanna make a difference,’” she said.
She urged attendees to make their anger towards administration count.
“Pour it into the ballot box,” she said. “Make sure your voice is heard.”
Fiero stressed that despite Carter County and Tennessee both being red, voices for Democrats are not unheard.
“Every vote will matter this year,” she said.
Candidate speakers who shared their visions included the following: Amber Riddle who is running for TN Senate District 4; Bobby Harrell who is running for TN State Representative District 4; Blair Walsingham who is running for U.S. Congress District 1; and Marquita Bradshaw who is running for U.S. Senate.
More information on these candidates can be found on their Facebook pages and websites, respectively. Riddle’s Facebook page is titled “Amber Riddle for State Senate” and her website is www.amberriddle.com. Harrell’s Facebook page is titled “Bobby Harrell for Tennessee State House.” Walsingham’s Facebook page is titled “Blair for Congress- Tennessee 1st” and her website is www.blairforcongress.com. Bradshaw’s Facebook page is titled “Marquita Bradshaw” and her website is www.marquitabradshaw.com.
In case you missed it, the full picnic, including presentations and speeches from candidates and additional speakers can be viewed on the Carter County Democratic Party’s Facebook page, which is also where to go for the latest updates.
