In a game that rewards possession, not having it makes you vulnerable. On Thursday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium, the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones found out just how vulnerable as Dobyns-Bennett took a 1-nil victory.
Much of this match was played in the Lady Cyclones end of the pitch as D-B showed excellent precision passing and timing on set pieces.
In the 20th minute, Emilee Lane scored off a rebound and fired a low shot past EHS sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Heaton for a 1-nil Lady Indians lead.
EHS had an opportunity in the late stages of the first half when freshman Mollie Johnson broke past the Indians backline and fired a shot at D-B keeper Ellie Nash, who got a hand on it as she came off her line. The ball continued to roll toward the open net but Indians backline defender Annabeth Parker circled back and stopped the ball before it crossed the goal line.
“I knew it didn’t have enough roll to go in,” Lady Cyclones head coach Bill McClay said. “We were down two starters and I thought that across the board it was a good effort. Morgan did a great job giving up that one goal and I think she just didn’t see it. I think we did a really good job of holding our offside line and it threw them off what they wanted to do.”
The Indians peppered the Cyclone goal with 12 first-half shots but Heaton was stellar between the pipes stopping 11 of them with a good many of them great stops.
The second half saw the Cyclones earn a pair of corner kicks that showed potential – including a header from Shayla Orellana – but it was turned away by the Indians defenders.
EHS showed a bit more ability to possess the ball but were not able to mount a consistent threat.
“When you play D-B you will always be up against it, but I’m glad they play us because it stresses us,” McClay said. “There are things we can work on and stuff we can build on.
“This kind of effort can pay dividends down the road because we still have to play Central and Greeneville down the road.”
