What is a football Homecoming Week at a high school without a football game to play – not a Homecoming.

When Union County decided to cancel out with the Elizabethton Cyclones on Friday night to what is thought to be a COVID issue, the Cyclone coaching staff and athletic director went into overdrive trying to find a team to replace Union County with.

Many thought this might happen as Union County had already canceled their games with Greeneville and Sullivan South after getting bashed in their season’s first game by Grainger County.

However, fingers and toes had been crossed that this wouldn’t be the case.

Unfortunately, it came to fruition and unfortunately after reaching out to several teams including David Crockett which had to cancel their game with Cherokee who had COVID issues county-wide this week.

Walker Valley, Hardin Valley, Knox Webb, and others were called upon with not a glimmer of hope.

Sullivan Central was called upon to see if they could possibly move the Cyclones and Cougars game to this week. However, Central had an understandable situation in the fact they had Senior Night planned and couldn’t do so.

On Tuesday, Elizabethton Athletic Director Forrest Holt sent out a communication in regard to the Homecoming festivities that had been scheduled for Friday night.

“As of today, we still don’t have a football game this week for homecoming,” Holt stated. “We have planned to have a homecoming/senior night combo on October 30th, when we host Sullivan Central.

“If for some reason we do not have a game, we will continue with a planned homecoming/senior night event the night of the 30th in Citizens Bank Stadium.

“We have also decided to postpone the elementary pep rallies until the 30th as well. We feel like this will be a better option given this week’s circumstances. We will plan on following the same schedule on the 30th that we had set up for this Friday.”

The Cyclones are slated to face off with the Greeneville Greene Devils next week in Greeneville.
