MILLIGAN — Milligan University alumni and friends have the opportunity to reconnect and celebrate Milligan’s distinct, close-knit community during the university’s virtual Homecoming weekend, Oct. 23-25.
Traditional Homecoming events, such as a fall theatre production, faculty lectures and musical offerings, will be streamed on the university’s Facebook and YouTube channels over the weekend.
“Homecoming weekend allows our alumni all over the world to reflect on how their time at Milligan and the relationships formed here continue to enrich their lives,” said Theresa Garbe, Milligan’s director of alumni relations and development. “While we cannot gather together on campus this year, we are excited to offer a variety of virtual Homecoming activities to the broader Milligan family in their homes.”
A highlight of the weekend will be the premiere of an original theatre production, “Reconnecting,” on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. This inventive production, written and performed by Milligan students, features a collection of heartfelt monologues inspired by students’ personal experiences during COVID-19.
“Our production explores how the lives of Milligan students have been forever changed by COVID-19, as well as images of a day in the life of a Milligan student living during a global pandemic,” shared Richard Major, professor of theatre and director of the play.
The weekend will also feature faculty lectures and Broadway-themed musical performances by Milligan’s vocal and instrumental ensembles.
On Saturday, Dr. Kellie Brown, area chair of music, will provide a lecture at 10 a.m. on her latest book, “The Sound of Hope.” Brown’s nonfiction book reflects on how music provided solace, resistance and salvation during the Holocaust and World War II. Additionally, Dr. Christine Browning, professor of counseling, will share counseling insights related to childhood developmental trauma in a faculty lecture at 2:30 p.m.
