Lady Cyclones fall in semifinals of Hardee’s Classic

The Elizabethton Lady Cyclones were hoping to enjoy a day off and enjoy Thanksgiving with family knowing that they had a chance to return to the court and compete for the championship of the Hardee’s Classic being played at David Crockett High School.
Instead, Cocke County Fighting Lady Cocks took advantage of building a 36-26 halftime lead, and then a cold offensive fourth quarter led to the Lady Cyclones having to settle for a third-place contest on Saturday at 3 pm after dropping the contest, 55-44.
The game opened up tightly contested as both teams battled to a 14-14 tie at the first stop of the contest. 
Morgan Headrick scored eight points in the first eight minutes to pace Coach Lucas Andrews Lady Cyclone squad. Lina Lyon scored four and Renna Lane added two in the quarter.
Sydney Clevenger nailed two three-pointers to help Cocke County keep pace in the period. Four points each were scored by Paige Nehammer and Cameron Holcomb.
The Lady Cocks took control of the contest in the second period when they added 22 points to their side of the scoreboard to take the seven-point halftime lead.
Jalen Cofield, Nehammer, and Halle Kitchen knocked down five points apiece in the stanza to help Cocke County build their lead.
McKendra Norris totaled five in the quarter to help Elizabethton stay with shooting range going to the intermission. Lyon added four and Maddie Fowler dropped a trey to account for the Lady Cyclones 12 points in the quarter.
The Lady Cyclones came out and looked to get back into the game in the third quarter as they were able to slice into the lead by outscoring the Lady Cocks 14-6 in the period.
Headrick went back to work scoring nine points to help pull the Lady Cyclones within two points heading into the final period trailing 42-40. Lane contributed in the run knocking down a trey and Lyon added two.With an opportunity to seize the win, the Lady Cyclones couldn’t buy enough points in the final eight minutes as Cocke County put together a 13-4 run to seal the victory.
The Lady Cyclones were paced by Headrick with a team and game-high 17 points with Lyon chipping in with 10 points. Lane finished with seven points while Norris collected five.
Fowler (3) and Marlee Mathena (2) closed out the scoring log for Elizabethton.
Holcomb finished with 15 points to lead the Lady Cocks while Clevenger and Nehammer contributed with 14 and 13 respectively.
