JOHNSON CITY (AP) — An inmate who was supposed to be receiving surgery Friday at a hospital in East Tennessee has escaped, a sheriff said.
Greene County Sheriff Wesley Holt told WJHL-TV the escaped inmate is Mark Hanselman, 55, of Indiana, who was shot by a Greene County deputy Dec. 3 during a confrontation.
Hanselman was scheduled for surgery at Johnson City Medical Center when he escaped, Holt said.
He was not believed to be armed, Johnson City Police Department Deputy Chief Debbie Botelho said.
East Tennessee State University, which is near the hospital, issued an alert urging students to shelter in place due to the escape.
