Unaka senior Will Sexton scored his 1000th point at Viking Hall
Wednesday afternoon, but the Rangers dropped an 82-61 loss to the Unicoi
County Blue Devils.
Sexton’s basket with 2:38 left in the third enrolled his
name in the record books at Unaka. He joins a list of Rangers that
started with Bo Gouge in 1948.
The game was never close as Unicoi Co. jumped out to a 10-0 lead.
Joe-z Blamo, despite the fact he had four fouls, turned in a good
performance in scoring 18-points.
Unicoi Co. led 17-9 after one, then a great second quarter, where at one
time they outscored Unaka 15-2 to build a 40-18 lead.
It was smooth sailing as Coach John Good was able to get all his
players valuable playing time.
Unicoi Co. only outscored Unaka by three in the second half, 42-39, but
the lead they built in the first half was too much to overcome.
Freshman Marcus Shomaker turned in a great performance grabbing eight
rebounds.
To go with Blamo’s 18 points, Joseph Slagle scored 13, and Sexton finished
with 10.
Unicoi Co. was led in scoring by Robbie O’Dell with 18, and Eli Johnson with 17.
The Rangers will play next Wednesday at Viking Hall taking on Bristol.
