Lady Cyclones fend off late Unicoi Co. rally

Any night that as a member of the Three Rivers Conference a team can earn a victory whether by one point or double digits is a great night and the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones were elated after being able to fend off the Lady Blue Devils of Unicoi County.

Led by a dozen points each from Torrie Roberts and Morgan Headrick, the Lady Cyclones grabbed an early lead and hold onto that edge down the stretch to record the win, 42-39.

Both teams got off to a good start offensively as Elizabethton managed to take a 16-13 lead at the first horn.

Roberts had the hot hand in the quarter as she dropped a trey along with two field goals to record seven points. Headrick recorded four of her 12 in the period while McKendra Norris drained a trey and Renna Lane knocked down a pair of free throws.

Caroline Podvin scored five to pace Unicoi Co. while Jocelyn Metcalf and Tenley Holt each contributed with a trey.

After the quick, fast-paced start in the opening quarter, both teams hit an icy patch offensively struggling to put points on the board as the Lady Cyclones managed to extend their lead to 24-17 at the intermission.

Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Blue Devils worked to shave a point off the Lady Cyclones edge in the third quarter outscoring the home team 9-8.

Podvin and Allie Lingerfelt buried long-range threes to lead the Lady Blue Devils in the period.

Meanwhile, Headrick scored six of the eight Lady Cyclone points to keep Coach Lucas Andrews team out front 32-26 heading to the final eight minutes of action.

The Lady Cyclones were able to maintain their lead down the stretch to close out the contest as Roberts scored five points adding a three ball while Lina Lyon scored three in the final period as well.
