HAMPTON – The Hampton Lady Bulldogs were colder than the layer of snow that surrounded Hampton High School on Monday night and the end result was a good old woodshed spanking from the South Greene Lady Rebels.
All one had to do was take a look at the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter to know it was going to be a long night as South Greene outscored the home-standing Lady ‘Dogs 13-1 in the opening eight minutes and cruised to a 58-29 win.
The game could have been much worse if the Lady ‘Dogs didn’t dig down and bear their teeth to continue to fight back at every opportunity they could to keep the game from having a much larger deficit.
Kiley Collins of the Lady Rebels was carrying the biggest switch as the South Greene guard was deadly from beyond the three-point arc on the night hitting six in the contest to finish with a game-high 22 points.
Collins had plenty of help in the game as Jayden Merriweather totaled 10 points in the win while Addison Williams and Ava Clark both knocked down eight points each in the victory.
For Hampton, the Lady Bulldogs didn’t have anyone to hit double figures in the game as Linsey Jenkins tallied nine points to lead all Hampton scorers.
Madison McClain added eight points in the disappointing loss.
Hampton struggled throughout the game to maintain possession of the basketball leading to several turnovers and easy Lady Rebel baskets.
The Lady ‘Dogs hit the glass hard trying to somehow fight back within striking distance but the deficit was just too much to overcome.
It goes from the frying pan to the fire for the Lady Bulldogs as on Friday they make the trip to Roan Mountain to take on the feisty Lady Highlanders in conference play.
