The Hampton Lady Bulldogs were hoping to extend their season when they played host to the Sullivan North Lady Golden Raiders in the District 1-A girls basketball tournament inside VanHuss-White Gym on Thursday night.
Thanks in part to building a 30-24 lead at intermission and a big second half, the Lady Bulldogs of Coach Bud Hazelwood survived the elimination game by taking a big chunk out of the Lady Raiders by a 70-40 score.
Hampton used a balanced scoring attack in the opening 16 minutes of play with six Lady ‘Dogs getting into the scoring column.
Madi McClain led the opening charge with nine points in the half while Linsey Jenkins chipped in with six points.
Macy Henry and Bre Davis each netted five in the half. Destini Milhorn dropped a trey and Sara Orr added two points.
The turning point in the game came in the third period as Hampton stretched the advantage to 47-30 behind eight points from McClain including a pair of treys.
With the big lead, the pressure was off the Lady ‘Dogs backs and they responded with a 23-point fourth quarter to easily take the victory.
McClain finished the contest as the game-high scorer with 17 points. Jenkins also reached double figures with 11.
Hampton saw Nicole Guy and Milhorn add eight points, David finished with seven, and a trio of players with five points each in Orr, Henry, and Taylor Berry.
Skylar Hicks also finished with four points.
Lilly Crawford and Maddy Winters totaled 14 points each to lead the Lady Raiders in their final game as a school program with North slated to become a part of West Ridge High School next year.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs earned a slot opposite the North Greene Lady Huskies on Saturday night.
