The Elizabethton Cyclone tennis team welcomed the Volunteer Falcons to the Cyclone tennis courts on Wednesday afternoon for a match involving both boy’s and girl’s tennis squads.
By the time the singles and doubles play had come to an end and the scores tallied, both Cyclone teams walked off the courts victorious in their day’s effort.
In girls’ play, the Lady Cyclone netters eeked out a tight 5-4 match to take the win.
Doubles play opened the match as the team of Susanna Digby and Mattie Davis slipped past the Lady Falcon duo Brooklyn Ward and Carlee McClain to get the Lady Cyclones off on the right foot.
Chloe Force and Karie Merritt took a tough 4-8 defeat at the hands of Volunteer’s Samantha Flippin and Lillie Redwine while Elizabethton’s Maggie Rowland and Madelyn Outland earned an 8-1 match win over Abbey Gilliam and Reagan Lipe.
Moving to singles, in #1 seed action, Digby and Ward squared off with Digby fighting off the determined Lady Falcon by a 8-6 score to take the match.
Davis dropped a hard-fought match to McClain 6-8 while Force also was defeated by Flippin 2-8. Merritt battled Redwine to the very end before dropping a 6-8 match final.
Rowland came through in a big way for the Lady Cyclones in the #5 seed action as she defeated Maggie Bice of Volunteer 8-5 to leave the match even at four match wins apiece.
With the match hanging in the balance, Outland’s narrow 8-6 win over Gilliam in #6 seed play provided the deciding win to give the Lady Cyclones the 5-4 victory.
In a match that didn’t count in the outcome, Alley Taylor of EHS won 6-2 over Reagan Lipe.
Moving to the boy’s side of play, the outcome wasn’t as dramatic as the Cyclones handily defeated the visiting Falcons, 8-1.
In doubles play, EHS teammates Elijah Smith and Kaden Street teamed up for a 8-1 match victory over Conner Cradic and Kaden Hobbs. Carson Peters and Nicholas Wilson of Elizabethton teamed up for an 8-1 win over Alex Matlock and Aiden Glass.
And in the final doubles match, the Cyclone team of Alex Taylor and Caden Miller was victorious over Will Justice and Jackson Carter of Volunteer with an 8-5 win.
In singles play, the Cyclones Smith, Street, Peters, Taylor, and Wilson all came away with easy wins over their Falcon opponent while Miller fell to Carter, 1-8.
