William Joseph “Joey” Perkins, 45, of Newland, N.C., passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Joey was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., to Brenda Sue Street Pritchard, of the home, and the late Edward Thompson. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Billy Joe and Ruby Street; an uncle, Terry Street; and an aunt and uncle, Teresa Stevens and Raymond Stevens.
Joey worked in the food business and was of the Christian faith. He graduated from Cloudland High School, where he had excelled in football and basketball. Joey loved whittling on wood, the outdoors — especially camping and most importantly spending time with his family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his mother and stepfather, Brenda Pritchard and Teddy Hoilman, of the home; his wife of 13 years, Dawn Perkins; three daughters, Bailee Perkins of Rock Hill, S.C., Chloey Hudson of Butler, Tenn., and Destiny Reed of Clarksville, Tenn.; two sons, Nathan Reed of Rock Hill, S.C., and Jerry “Jay” Reed and his fiancée, Shelly Spencer of Blackburg, S.C.; two grandchildren, Braxton and Watson; one brother, Brandon Thompson and his fiancée, Cherokee Miller of Elizabethton; two uncles, Randal Street of Elizabethton and Billy Street and wife Missy of Hampton; and his special friends, Ryan Honeycutt, Michelle Carden, Terry Hughes, Nikki Clawson, Eddie Miller and Mr. Glenn. Several nieces, nephews, great-aunts and great-uncles also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of William Joseph “Joey” Perkins will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 8, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Pastor Randy English officiating. Music will be under the direction of Moe and Dink Hughes. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 9, in the Street Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be Moe Hughes, Dink Hughes, Shadrack Vestal, Lee Bare, Stacy Oliver and Micah Rhinehart. Honorary pallbearers will be Brandon Thompson, Nathan Reed and Jay Reed. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home of Roan Mountain at 10:15 a.m. Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.
