Although the school year has officially come to a close and the 2020 prep football season is in the rearview mirror, COVID-19 prevented one last hurrah for the Elizabethton Cyclone football team who decided to wait until a time where their fans could come out and celebrate the presentation of the championship rings.
The Cyclones earned that honor by winning their second consecutive BlueCross Bowl Class 4A State Football Championship in Cookeville at the end of 2020 with a 41-14 victory over the Haywood Tomcats.
At the time of the contest, the crowd was limited due to the pandemic and even still there were nearly 2,000 Cyclone fans that made the trip.
On Saturday evening June 5th at 5:30 pm, the Cyclones want to make sure that all their fans are made aware to come out and celebrate that win as the team will receive their second straight championship ring.
This year’s championship was marked by another season that saw the Cyclones run the slate without a blemish as they once again finished 15-0 and are currently on a 30-0 run over the last two seasons.
Battling not only the opposition including two more wins over arch-rival Greeneville and a big win in the state semifinals on the road at Nolensville, but the Cyclones also had to sidestep COVID picking up a 1-0 win over Union City and having various players out due to testing positive at different stops throughout the season.
However, the team marched forward and captured the gold ball.
Now, it’s time to recognize the players and coaches who helped to earn those 15 wins in 2020.
The ceremony will take place on Citizens Bank Stadium field.
