2021 Carter County Omnium… Champions crowned on final day of event

After three grueling competitions in the 2021 Carter County Omnium, Sunday brought to close the event as the Criterium held in downtown Elizabethton gave the cyclists their final totals to see who would come out as the champions for each category.
In the Men’s Pro 1/2 category, the pre-race favorite Stephen Bassett from Knoxville fended off all challengers to take home the hardware for his efforts.
Richard Arnopol from Boulder, Colorado claimed second in the division while William Hardin hailing from Winston Salem, North Carolina took the third-place spot on the podium.
Bassett easily outdistanced the field by taking 74 points in the event with Arnopol following with 48 total points in the three-event challenge.
Men’s Category 3 saw Brevard. North Carolina’s Tyler Miranda narrowly fended off Winston Salem’s Craig ‘CJ” Burford by only two points 54-52. Third-place finisher Aiden Reuter from Germantown made this category a nail-biter as he finished with 51 points.
Reilly Oberding from Mountain Brook, Alabama took the Category 4 division by finishing with a combined 65 points, nine points ahead of second-place finisher Kein Denzler of Garrettsville, Ohio.
Christopher Gates from Columbus, Ohio finished in third place with a two-day total of 41 points.
In Men’s Novice (Category 5), local cyclist Mitchell Bronstetter from Johnson City won the category by three points over Clarksville Paul O’Donnell. Another Johnson City racer, Coleman Churitch, finished the category in third place.
Alexander Zambrana from Asheville reeled in the Masters +35/+45 category trophy by completing the event with 55 points. Chapel Hill, North Carolina rider Keith Geraden made the category a competitive one as he finished in second place with a total of 53 points.
Carlos Zamarripa from Cary, North Carolina was the third-place finisher in the category.
The Masters 40+ saw Mitchell Hopkins from Winston Salem take the title followed by Charlie Putnal from Flat Rock, North Carolina captured second place. Cookeville’s Jonathan Sheumaker was the third-place finisher.
In the men’s Masters +50 category, Dirk Pohlmann of Knoxville outdistanced Paul Carter of Clarksville to earn the title. Randal Warren of Asheville
took his place on the podium in third.
Chattanooga’s Timothy Goodin was the first-place finisher in the Men’s Masters 60+ category while Knoxville’s Kent Bostick and Louisville, Kentucky’s Thomas Burridge took second and third respectively.
On the ladies side, in the Women’s Pro 1/2 category, Florence Howden from Mooresville, North Carolina secured the hardware with a total of 70 points.
Sommers Creed from Athens, Georgia finished the three events in second place while Debbie Milne from Greenville, South Carolina finished in third.
In Women’s Category 3, Mallory MacRostie from Washington, D.C. took first place honors. Melanie King from Atlanta, Georgia, and Kate Seiler from Louisville, Kentucky finished second and third respectively.
Finally, in the Category 4/5 for women, Chattanooga’s Stephanie Smith collected the first-place hardware with Audrey Baker from Noblesville, Indiana claiming second and Atlanta’s Elanor Finlayson capturing third place.
