Unicoi – The Town of Unicoi will host its first free drive-in movie of the season Friday, June 18, at the Tourist Information Center located at 106 Unicoi Village Place. Sound will be played through FM radio and outdoor speakers, concessions will open at 8 p.m., and the family-friendly movie will begin at 9 p.m.
“People have already shown us that they’re ready to get back out and enjoy community events again,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Kathy Bullen. “So we’re looking forward to bringing back our summer movie series that families really seem to love.”
The Movies in the Park series, which includes one free movie per month from June to August, was moved from the Bogart-Bowman Cabin to the Tourist Information Center last year to make the event more COVID-safe by providing a drive-in movie experience.
“The drive-ins were such a hit last year that we’ve decided to keep that format,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “Parking is easier, concessions are more accessible and the entire experience of a drive-in was something the kids really enjoyed.”
Like past events, the Clinchfield Caboose will support the screen with cars lining up back through the Mountain Harvest Kitchen parking lot, the Doug Hopson Buffalo Pavilion will house the concessions which will include hot dogs, nachos and cheese, chips, candy and drinks, and the feature movie is listed on the town’s website and Facebook pages.
“I can say that the movie is a newer Disney favorite that tells the untold story of an iconic villain,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “It really turns the whole story upside down and teaches us not to judge a book by the cover.”
The movie will play at dark and guests may enjoy the feature film from the comfort of their vehicles or may bring camping chairs and sit closer to the screen. An event map may be viewed on the town’s website in addition to the announcement of which movie will be showing, as well as the July and August movie dates and features.
Special thanks to drive-in movie sponsors Single Dad Homesteading, Reinhart Food Services, Unicoi Walmart, and The Erwin Record for their generosity and support of local community events.
