It has been a busy couple of weeks of action on area links for local prep golf teams as the season quickly winds down toward the District Tournament for each respective classification.
The following is a look at how local teams have been fairing.
Cyclone boys claim 2nd, girls 5th in Big 9 Conference play
Led by Caleb Tipton’s two-over-par 72, the Elizabethton Cyclone boys finished second in the recent Big 9 Conference tournament behind first-place finisher Science Hill.
The “Toppers fired a team total 298 – six strokes ahead of the Cyclones who finished with a 304.
Chase Buck added a 76 for the Cyclones to go along with Tipton’s score with Alex Gouge and Jacob Williams who ended the day with identical 78’s.
Carson Peters (80) and Luke Campbell (82) also competed for the Cyclones in the tournament.
On the ladies side, Gabby Miller fired an 88 while Hannah McDonnell carded out with a 94 to make up the team score of 182. Other Lady Cyclones who participated in the tournament were Ashlyn Guy (102) and Maylie Stout (108).
Cyclone boys, girls claim second in three-way tournament
The Elizabethton Cyclone golf team recently hosted a three-team tournament at Elizabethton Golf Course with the Cyclones finishing in second place in both boys and girls play against Science Hill and Sullivan East.
Caleb Tipton was the medalist on the day finishing with a nine-hole total of 35. Luke Campbell and Alex Gouge came into the clubhouse with identical 41’s while Carson Peters and Chase Buck matched each other with a 42.
Jacob Williams (43), Austin Burchfield (43), and Clay Hopland (44) completed the round as well for the Cyclones who finished with a 159, seven strokes behind the winning team of Science Hill who carded out with a score of 152.
In girl’s play, Science Hill had a solid round of 79 to finish 13 strokes ahead of Elizabethton who finished with a 92.
Gabby Miller’s 44 led the way for the Lady Cyclones while Maylie Stout’s 48 helped to make up the two-person team total. Ashlyn Guy finished her round with a 49.
Hampton, Unaka, and Happy Valley square off at EGC
In a five-way prep golf match at Elizabethton Golf Course, local teams from Happy Valley, Unaka, and Hampton squared off with University High and Johnson County in boys action.
When the scores were totaled, Hampton came out on top with a 177 while University High claimed second and Johnson County third.
Unaka ended up in fourth place while Happy Valley came in fifth.
RJ Tolley’s 41 led the way for Hampton while Avery Hill fired a 43. The rest of the Bulldog team score was made up by Caleb Royston and Jude Hickman who finished with a 45 and 48 respectively.
Unaka was paced by Gavin Siegfried and Brayden Powell who came into the clubhouse with matching 47’s. Mason Wilson added a 49 while Gavin Shoun’s 62 wrapped up the Rangers team score of 205. Sam Lewis added a 63 but didn’t figure into the team score.
Happy Valley was led by Jaryn Gouge’s 46. Cole Deakins (52), Nick Bailey (58), and Nylon McCool (63) closed out the scoring for the Warriors.
In girl’s play, the Lady Bulldogs made it a clean sweep by winning their four-team showdown with U-H, Unaka, and Happy Valley.
Macy Henry’s 42 set the pace for the Lady Bulldogs while Rylie McClain fired a 46 to make up the two-player team score. Gracie Burkett (57) and Brooklyn Adams (58) were the other Lady Bulldogs who took to the links.
U-H finished second while Sadie Shoun’s 42 helped her Lady Rangers collect a third-place finish. Sarah Blevins (58) and Laikyn Steven (62) were on the course as well for the Lady Rangers.
Happy Valley’s Cayden Anderson was the leader on the day for the Lady Warriors as Anderson finished her round with a 51. Grace Hollifield and Hannah Monroe finished with a 57 and 61 respectively to complete the day for Coach Gene Renfro’s Lady Warriors.
