The Washington County Young Republicans welcomed 2021 Tennessee Republican Party Statesman of the Year Wanda May and Criminal Court Judge Stacy Street to their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Thursday.

Also attending the meeting was state Sen. Rusty Crowe, R – Third District, for whom May once worked.

A video commemorated May for her numerous achievements in recruiting, campaigning for, and helping elect Republican candidates in the region of East Tennessee since 1970 before she took the podium.

Thanking all those who helped her throughout her career, May also spoke about Phil Roe, former U.S. Representative for Tennessee’s 1st congressional district.

“The thing I loved about Phil was that despite all of the years that he was in Washington, he never changed and was a man of great integrity,” she said. “He loves his town, he loves his country, and he loves his community.”

Street spoke about the role of politics in the judicial system. “You do not want a Republican judge, and you do not want a Democrat judge. You want a judge that is fair and honest and one that follows the law,” he said.

Street also issued a call to action to the young people in attendance. “You can do your part by helping us keep government small. Because when you let the government become too big, it becomes a government by the government, for the government, and of the government as opposed to a government by the people, for the people, and of the people,” he said.
