GREENEVILLE – Terry Bellamy Park has not been a kind place for the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones soccer squad. On Thursday, it proved to be a nightmare once again as EHS (10-8-1) fell to the Lady Devils by a 9-nil mercy rule tally.
Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Heaton was spectacular between the pipes for the Cyclones, making at least a half dozen goal-saving stops.
“She got us to the second half,” Lady Cyclones head coach Bill McClay said. “That’s what I told her when she came in. I don’t know if it was three games in four days or what. They do things that we haven’t even seen, that’s why they are state champs. We schedule teams like Dobyns Bennett and Jefferson County, but they aren’t as good as they are.”
Greeneville scored five first-half goals and enjoyed a pair of players each getting a three-goal hat trick. Anna Shaw and Tana Bookhamer each had three goals with Delana Debusk good for a pair of tallies and Kendyl Foschi had one goal.
Bookhamer got the first two goals of the match in the fifth and ninth minutes followed by a goal from Shaw in the 10th and 17th minutes for a 4-nil Greeneville advantage. Debusk scored in the 38th minute to make it a 5-nil halftime lead for the Devils.
“Both of my strong hitters did well,” said interim head coach / athletic director Brad Woolsey. “My mid’s did a great job of keeping 21 (Kaiya Simmons) and 3 (Mollie Johnson) in check and the backline did what they had to.”
In the second half, the Devils looked to put this one away quickly as Bookhamer finished off her hat trick in the 41st minute. Shaw scored in the 42nd and 45th minutes for an 8-nil advantage and one away from a mercy-rule victory.
That came in the 51st minute when Foschi scored her only goal of the match. EHS remains alive but must go on the road – possibly to Union County – on Tuesday for a possible return to Bellamy Park.
