Golf Club Acres will present its 43rd Annual Lights for Jesus Sunday, Dec. 12. The Lights for Jesus presentation in Golf Club Acres has been previously scheduled for Saturday evening but due to the forces of rain and wind Saturday, the presentation was moved to Sunday evening.
Approximately 150 homes participate in the event with 5,000 luminaries lining the streets from G Street to Armour Drive. Neighbors prepare the luminaries by placing a 10-hour votive candle in a white paper bag that has been filled with sand.
There are 10 block chairpersons who work diligently to distribute the candles. In addition, the residents give a lot of time and effort to make this a special event for the entire community.
The project began in 1979 by the Golf Club Acres Bible Club composed of 30 children using the theme the Bible verse: “Let your light shine so before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.” The celebration has continued for 43 years because of the work and support of neighbors in Golf Club Acres.
“During this time of year, neighbors are asked to pray for God’s protection over family, neighbors, friends, and nation,” said Pat Sweeney, who along with his wife, Joyce, head up the event.
The public is invited to view the luminaries from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Motorists enter the subdivision from G Street onto Sabine Street, located behind Grindstaff Dealership.
“We hope the people that drive through will know that this is all for Jesus and to celebrate His birth. We hope it will bring joy to everyone and may it bring glory to our Father and His Son,” said Sweeney.
