Roan Mountain, Sycamore Shoals schedule 2022 First Day events

The Annual First Day Hikes are scheduled Saturday, Jan. 1, in Tennessee state parks.
At Roan Mountain State Park, the First Day Hike is scheduled from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and will follow the Moonshiner’s Run Trail.
Celebrate the New Year with a moderate two-mile loop hike beginning and ending at the Moonshiner’s Run Trailhead. Participants must register for the hike in advance and should dress for the weather conditions.
The hike is free but donation options are available at registration that will be used for the improvement of Roan Mountain State Park.
At Sycamore Shoals State Park, participants can hike back in history with a visit to Tennessee’s Oldest Frame House, the Carter Mansion at 1031 Broad St. Ranger Cory Franklin will lead the hike, which will be historical in nature. Franklin will share about architectural details of the house, and hikers will enjoy the beauty of the site and learn about 18th Century New Year and 12th Night traditions and superstitions such as first footing, queen’s cake, and the kissing bough.
The hike is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will last about an hour. The hike has already filled for the day.
