Property taxes for Carter County’s top 25 taxpayers for 2021 came in at $1,343,268, down from $1,424,909 in 2020 which was almost a 6% decrease.
According to Nicholas Simerly with the Carter County Tax Assessor’s office, a couple of factors could have affected the totals.
“The tax rate on appraised property dropped from $2.47 in 2020 to $2.03 in 2021 which more than likely was responsible for a large part of the drop,” said Simerly. “Some businesses also had appraised value appeals with the Equalization Board and had their appraisal adjusted once reviewed.
“But I still believe most of the decrease came from the drop in the tax rate.”
