HAMPTON – Hampton defensive pressure in the third period enabled the Bulldogs to pull away from North Greene on Friday night at VanHuss-White gym and earn a 64-54 Watauga Valley Conference victory in boys basketball.
On the girls side the Lady Bulldogs missed 11 second-half free throws and let a three-point halftime lead slip away in a 62-57 loss.
North Greene led 17-13 after one period was in the books but the Bulldogs (13-4, 3-0 WVC) rallied in the second and third periods. Hampton took a 33-30 halftime lead and held the Huskies to zero points until under three minutes remained in the third quarter to open a 50-39 advantage going into the final stanza.
“I thought our kids came out and played hard in the second half,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “North Greene has got a good team that is well-coached, but we got the job done. We had a balanced attack with Conor Burleson taking down seven big rebounds and we had 19 assists as a team.”
The Huskies cut into the Hampton lead with a deuce from Cody Freshour and a trey from Mauro Garcia sandwiched around a deuce from Burleson to make it a 52-44 contest.
After a trey from Caden Buckles, the ‘Dogs took a 57-50 advantage at the 4:13 mark of regulation.
Once again North Greene sandwiched a pair of deuces around a basket from Buckles to make it a 59-54 Bulldogs lead. Hampton scored the last five points of the game to salt away the victory. Freshour scored a team-high 20 points for North Greene while Buckles topped a balanced ‘Dogs scoring sheet with 13 points.
Senior Michael Harrison had 10 points and fellow senior Morgan Lyons added nine.

The Lady ‘Dogs led 25-22 at the half but North Greene stormed out to take the lead in the third quarter – outscoring Hampton 22-10 in the period – to take a 44-35 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Huskies took a 47-37 lead after a pair of free throws from senior post Brooklyn Anderson but Piper Helle knocked down a three-point bucket and followed that with one-of-two free throws.
The ‘Dogs run continued with a deuce from sophomore post Taylor Berry and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe from Linzey Jenkins to make it a 47-44 game before Anderson knocked down a shot in the paint.
“We’re getting close,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Brandon Carpenter said. “You could tell the experience factor went to them. They are a good basketball team, well-coached and we are trying to get to that point. A couple of free throws was the big difference tonight.”
Hampton (10-9, 1-2 WVC) cut it to a two-point game on a trey from Berry that made it a 55-53 contest in favor of North Greene with 1:23 left in the game, but once again the Huskies had an answer with Shelby Davenport knocking down free throws.
A pair of free throws from Macy Henry made it a 58-56 contest with 33.6 ticks left. The Huskies hit their last four free throws to secure the win. Davenport and Berry each scored 20 points for their respective teams with Jenkins scoring 15 for the Bulldogs.
