ULYSSES, Kan. — Betty Jo Mathes, 85, died Sunday, January 30, 2022, at her home in Ulysses. She was born August 13, 1936, in Elizabethton, Tenn., the daughter of Jason and Mary Francis (Scalf) Hill.
Betty grew up in Elizabethton and attended Elizabethton High School. She married Carroll Mathes on December 5, 1953, in Elizabethton. She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing, reading, and working crossword puzzles. Betty also helped her sister, Sue, with cakes and flowers for weddings. She enjoyed riding in the truck with her husband.
Betty and Carroll moved to Ulysses in March of 2021 to be closer to family. She enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren.
Betty is survived by her husband, Carroll; sons, Allen Mathes and wife Holly of Ulysses, Joey Mathes and Robert Mathes, both of Elizabethton; daughters, Mary Klein and husband Rick of Ulysses, Donna Meadows of Topeka, Kan., and Melinda Pierce of Blountville, Tenn.; brothers, Paul Hill of Elizabethton, Tenn., Cecil Hill of Portland, Ore., and Gary Hill of Elizabethton, Tenn.; sister, Barbara Sue Elliott of Elizabethton; 33 grandchildren; 80 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son, Kenneth, in 2014; an infant brother; and granddaughters, Linda Mathes and Sarah Mathes.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 2, at 10 a.m. at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses with Josh Contreras officiating. Interment will follow in the Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 1, from 2 until 8 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses.
