BLUFF CITY – It was only fitting that the last match of Saturday’s TSSAA Region 1-A wrestling at Sullivan East High School featured Trenton Taylor of Elizabethton in the 285-pound weight class.
The Cyclones had a banner day leading up to the match capturing three second-place finishes and qualifying five for sectionals next week.
Taylor was the top-seed heading into the regional and was ready to put a cherry on top of the day for his Cyclone teammates. It only took 52 seconds for Taylor to wrap up a region championship in his weight class to give the Cyclones their sixth qualifier and an overall team finish of fourth in the region.
A breakdown of the qualifiers are as follows:

The Cyclones Isaiah King (18-6) earned a region runner-up finish as he fell in a tight decision to Greeneville’s Cooper Johnson (18-5). It was an 8-5 final in the match.

Logan Watson of Elizabethton qualified for sectionals with a third-place finish as he defeated West Greene’s Asheton Shelton with a pinfall at 39 seconds of their match.

Elizabethton’s Holden Roaten was the top-seed going into the region but found a tough competitor in Malik Harris of Greeneville who pinned Roaten at the 5:56 mark of their match in the championship.
Roaten will represent Region 1-A as the runner-up at next week’s sectionals.
Derek Onks of Crockett claimed third place with a pinfall over West Greene’s Sean Neff in 2:43 of their match.

Three points were the difference between a third and fourth-place finish in the overall team results as Tennessee High just barely clipped the Cyclones for third place.
Greeneville finished first with 215 points followed by David Crockett with 173 points. Tennessee High and Elizabethton took third and fourth respectively followed by Sullivan East, West Greene, Chuckey-Doak, and Volunteer.
