HAPPY VALLEY – It was the Girl’s District 1 1-A play-in game on Thursday at Happy Valley High School between the Hampton Lady Bulldogs and the University High Lady Bucs and each team knew at the end of the game one was going to store away the basketballs until next season while the other would advance to region play as well as a shot at the District title.
The first half was an offensive struggle for both teams but it was a different story in the second half as the Lady Bulldogs forced the action and advanced to play Friday against the number-one seeded North Greene Lady Huskies with a 64-32 victory. They also earned the all-important spot in region play.
Although the Lady Bucs came into the contest with only one win all season, one couldn’t tell it the way the Johnson City team came out of the gate as they frustrated the Lady ‘Dogs the entire first half as the score was only 22-13 at the halftime break.
Macy Henry and Linsey Jenkins provided the offensive push in the first half as both Lady ‘Dogs scored six points each in the half. Breanna Davis and Taylor Berry contributed with four points apiece while Piper Helle closed out the first-half scoring with a deuce.
Delaney Trosin led the Lady Bucs with six points in the half. Catie Leonard added three points for U-H.
The second half was a completely different story as the Lady Bulldogs came out of the gate like Greyhounds behind the hot hand of Jenkins who lit up the scoreboard with 14 third-quarter points. Henry added six to her total with Madi McClain and Ryleigh Nickles both draining triples.
That push put Hampton up 48-23 and the handwriting began to show for the Lady Bucs. Hampton closed out the game by outscoring the Lady Bucs 16-9 to ensure they would be playing Friday night.
Jenkins finished with a game-high 20 points after her outburst in the third quarter. Henry also hit double figures with 17 for Hampton.
Trosin led the Lady Bucs with a team-high 12 points. Anna Wells added six points.
