GRAY – Daniel Boone High School played host to the District 1 2-A Girls Basketball tournament contest between the Happy Valley Lady Warriors and the West Greene Lady Buffaloes. A spot in the championship was on the line as South Greene awaited the winner.
Despite a late run from the Buffaloes, the Lady Warriors held on for the win, 41-28.
The game tipped with both teams eager to strike early looking for that all-important early momentum. Happy Valley was the one to grab the momentum with Scarlett Zeoli cashing in on six early points.
An additional three points from Marcida Moore was unmet with any opposition from a struggling West Greene offense.
Down 9-0 late in the first, the Buffaloes cashed in a couple of three-pointers to cut the lead down with Zeoli adding another score before the frame ended.
The second quarter was much of the same as the first with West Greene struggling to score. The Warriors kept their foot on the pedal with back-to-back three pointers from Kenzie Ramey and Kadie Bailey.
Bailey would add one more late three just before the halftime buzzer and the Lady Warriors would head into the break leading 20-11.
Coming out of the half, both sides stayed on the sloppy side with points coming at a premium. The Lady Warriors would keep their distance all quarter as Holly Moore scored four points in the frame including a driving euro step basket.
Aside from a couple of free throws from Bailey, the Warriors didn’t score any more points in the quarter, but they didn’t need to as they continued to play great defense as they led 26-16 heading into the final leg of play.
West Greene started the fourth by cutting the lead to just five, but that’s the closest they could get. Zeoli, Holly and Marcida found some big baskets down the stretch to help fend off a pesky Lady Buffalo team that refused to go down.
Both Marcida and Holly would make their free throws down the stretch to keep any hopes of a West Greene comeback in check.
When the final buzzer sounded, Happy Valley had punched their ticket to the championship game on Monday at 7:30 pm at Daniel Boone High School against the Lady Rebels.
