HAPPY VALLEY – The Hampton Bulldogs proved to be too much for the North Greene Huskies as Hampton and North Greene met in the District 1A Championship Tuesday night at Happy Valley.
It looked as if the Huskies were going to run away with the first period with quick scoring and a tight defense.  The Huskies went up by six early on, but the Bulldogs fought back and brought the game to within two, making it 12-10 by the end of the first period.
The Bulldogs picked up the pace in the second period with quicker ball movement and pressure defense, gaining the lead midway in the period.  However, North Greene wasn’t going to just sit around as they scored a three-pointer to bring them back within one point.
The Bulldogs Logan Whitehead would have a nice period with strong rebounding and also scoring a bucket.  But the period would belong to Cadon Buckles scoring seven points and cap it off by scoring a buzzer-beater three, putting Hampton up 27-21 at the half, and igniting the crowd.
Hampton jumped out to a 33-25 lead midway through the third period as baskets started to fall their way and North Greene started to struggle.
The Bulldogs would get more penetration inside as Morgan Lyons scored underneath, putting them up by 10 and forcing the Huskies to call a timeout to regroup.
The end of the period saw continued strong play inside as Conor Burleson hit Logan Whitehead all alone under the basket for two as the Huskies continued to struggle with their shots.  Hampton would put up a ten-point lead going into the fourth period.
North Greene tried to ignite something with a steal, but a referee would set an accidental pick which led to the Huskies turning it back over.  From this point, the Huskies would resort to a full-court press defense to try and rattle the Bulldogs.
A wise timeout by Hampton would address this and countered it well as the high-pressure defense would leave Hampton open under the basket on more than one occasion.
Excellent passing by the Bulldogs would exploit this and allow Hampton to add to their score, keeping it a 10-point game almost midway through the period.
A nail in the coffin would come as Michael Harrison would inbound to Conor Burleson who would race to the basket for an easy two with 1:13 to go.
Burleson iced the game after being fouled and hitting both shots on a one and one.  Time would run out on North Greene as Hampton would hold the ball and end up winning the District 1-A Championship, 51-42.
Jason Britton led the Huskies with 14 overall followed by Jasper Brand with 12.
Cadon Buckles was the star of the show with 13 overall and would take home tournament MVP honors.  Morgan Lyons and Conor Burleson would support with 10 points apiece.
