FROM STAFF REPORTS
The Unaka Lady Rangers were looking to make it a clean sweep of Region 1 girl’s teams over the girl’s teams from Region 2 during Friday night’s regional quarterfinal at Washburn.
When the smoke cleared, the Lady Rangers stood atop the wall watching as the Lady Pirates ship sank after the girls from Stoney Creek took a 52-38 victory making it a clean sweep.
Unaka came out of the gates shooting volleys into the Lady Pirates mast as the Lady Rangers built a 14-5 advantage at the first stop of the game and doubled the score by the break leading 32-16.
Junior sharpshooter Lyndie Ramsey tickled the cotton to the tune of 15 of her game-high 23 points in the first half. Julie Simerly coming off a strong District tournament chipped in with nine points in the first half as well.
Tara Whitehead and Macy Ensor each connected on a three-pointer in the first half as well with Mailey Guy adding two points.
Braelyn Coffey led the Lady Pirates attack with nine points in the half.
The second half saw Unaka pretty much match the Lady Pirates point for point as the Lady Eagles could only shave two points off the Lady Rangers lead to send Unaka to Walters State Community College for Monday’s girls semifinal contest against North Greene with the tip at 6 p.m.
Simerly and Ensor contributed nine points to the victory behind Ramsey’s effort.
Coffey finished with a team-high 22 points to pace the Lady Pirates. Megan Beeker added nine points in the loss for Cosby.
