JOHNSON CITY – The ETSU Football team and Head Coach George Quarles released the 2022 season schedule on Thursday afternoon. The Bucs will begin their journey of repeating as Southern Conference Champions on Thursday, Sept. 1 when the season kicks off at William B. Greene, Jr. Stadium.
“I am excited about the schedule that was put together for this upcoming fall,” stated Quarles. “It will be a challenging conference as always and I feel that each game will make us better as the season progresses. We are excited to continue the winning ways in front of the best fans in the Southern Conference.”
A DAWN OF A NEW AGE
The George Quarles Era will begin on Thursday, Sept. 1 with the Bucs playing host to Mars Hill in both the home and season opener at William B. Greene, Jr. Stadium. The showdown with the Lions will be the first game as a head coach in Coach Quarles’s career.
SOCON OPENER
ETSU will open Southern Conference action in just the second week of play when the Bucs travel to Charleston, S.C. for a meeting with The Citadel on Sept. 10.
WHAT A SOCON HOME OPENER!
The Bucs first home SoCon game will be circled on many calendars! On Saturday, Sept. 17, the Blue & Gold will welcome Coach Quarles’ former school into town as ETSU plays host to Furman. The last three meetings with the Paladins have been decided by one possession.
ROAD WARRIORS
Following the bout with the Paladins, ETSU will hit the road for three of the next four games, beginning with a non-conference battle at Robert Morris on Sept. 24 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Bucs will also square off with VMI (Oct. 8) in Lexington, Va. followed by Mercer (Oct. 15) in Macon, Ga.
THE RAIL
Sandwiched in between the three road games will be the Rail Rivalry on Saturday, Oct. 1 when the Bucs host Chattanooga at Greene Stadium. ETSU is looking to halt a two-game skid against the Mocs, hoping to reclaim the trophy that began in 2018 with a Buccaneer win.
SOCON SHOWDOWNS
The remaining three SoCon showdowns will feature the final two home games for the Blue & Gold. The Bucs will host Samford (Oct. 22) before making the trek to Spartanburg, S.C. on Oct. 29 for a battle with Wofford. The final SoCon contest will be held on Nov. 12 when Western Carolina arrives in Johnson City for the Blue Ridge Border Battle.
OPEN WEEK
ETSU’s open week will fall on the week before the Blue Ridge Border Battle, sandwiched between a pair of league contests. ETSU will sit idle on Nov. 5, allowing the Bucs to have two weeks to prepare for the Catamounts.
LET’S DO IT AGAIN
The Bucs will close out the 2022 regular season with another showdown with an SEC foe, this time traveling to Starkville, Miss. on Saturday, Nov. 19 to square off with Mississippi State. The Bulldogs have appeared in 12 consecutive bowl games dating back to the 2010 season.
