While the clearing of brush and trees beside Walmart on Overmountain Drive has many people curious about potential development, the city planning director said no projects are in the works.
Logan Ingle, Elizabethton City Planning Director, said there have been no plans received in regard to that particular piece of land.
“I have received several calls myself about what’s going on,” said Ingle. “They have cleared some of the brush and trees and a real estate sign has been placed on the front of the property, so I think they were just clearing brush getting it ready for sale.
“That is all I think that is going on there because we don’t have any plans or anything at this time related to development on the site.”
Ingle said officials have been talking with other potential developers, including a Weigel’s Gas and Convenience store that would be located on the corner of Broad St., where the Save-A-Lot grocery store is located.
Ingle said that Weigel’s is working in coordination with the TDOT road widening project.
“They submitted a site plan, as they like to have their ducks in a row before moving forward with development,” said Ingle. “Even though they knew it was going to be a while, they wanted to go ahead and submit their plans and get ready. We anticipate as that road widening project continues that we will see development related to that on that site.”
And Ingle said he knows residents are always curious about the potential of new hotel or motel developments.
“There has been a lot of conversation about hotels over the years,” Ingle said. “We continue to have conversations about that kind of development and how we can attract a quality hotel development. Unfortunately, the presence of COVID-19 has caused a little bit of delay in our ability to attract someone. That continues to be on our radar. Whatever the needs are in the community we need to talk about how we can attract developments to meet the needs of the community.”
Ingle said Harbor Freight is closer to completion at its new location in the Big Lots shopping plaza, and that will be exciting for the community as the shopping center will be completely filled.
