ROAN MOUNTAIN – While fans lining the fence to watch the softball contest between the home Cloudland Lady Highlanders and the visiting University Lady Bucs were doing all they could to stay warm as a blustery, chilled wind blew throughout the game, the Lady Highlanders just kept stoking the fire on the diamond.
The Lady ‘Lander offense was almost unstoppable as they put a pasting on the Lady Bucs by a score of 19-0 in a five-inning affair.
Cloudland scored four in the first, nine in the second, one in the third, and five in the fourth inning to support the strong pitching of senior Karah Fields who pitched the complete game allowing no hits, no runs, and no walks with two errors being the difference in a perfect game.
Fields helped her own cause at the plate going 3-for-3 and drawing a walk to score on all four attempts that she reached base.
Ryan Turbyfill also had a terrific day offensively for Coach Matt Birchfield’s team as Turbyfill batted 4-for-4 with three doubles and a single scoring all four times she reached base.
Saharra McKinney had two triples and a double in a 3-for-4 contest and crossed the plate each time she reached base. Kendall Birchfield and Caroline Shell also collected a pair of hits in the contest.
The Lady Highlanders had 16 hits in the game total.
