On Thursday evening at Winged Deer Park, the Elizabethton Cyclones fast start gave them a three-goal lead early and EHS came away with a 5-1 boys soccer victory.
“The team’s attitude coming here was different than it has been,”Cyclones head coach Bill McClay said. “We really wanted this game. This has been a competitive rivalry through the years even though they are not in the same district. Last game was 0-0 so we wanted to right the ship a little bit.”
In the third minute, EHS (6-0-1 overall) scored off a corner kick that was driven home by Riley Vernon. Three minutes later the Cyclones were at it again with Eli Williams scoring off an assist from Clay Hopland for a 2-nil lead.
Just one minute later the Cyclones took advantage of a mistake by the University High back line and Skylar Jenkins made the Bucs pay by putting a shot past goalkeeper George Holt for a 3-nil halftime advantage.
“We had a lot of good chances in this one,” McClay said. “We did a good job of crossing the ball and putting pressure passes into the box. We were spot on getting the ball out of the air and onto our feet.”
EHS got its fourth goal of the match in the 45th minute as Isaac Hurley scored.
“On Isaac’s goal we did a good job of switching the ball from the left to the right and then back to the middle for the goal,” McClay said. “We had some other good chances with Clay (Hopland) hitting the crossbar and one where their keeper made a one-handed save, so it was a good game.”
The Cyclones final tally came in the 66th minute of play and was scored by Jacob Williams. Over the final minutes EHS looked to keep the shutout alive but a crossing pass past the face of EHS goalkeeper Mason Williams found its way to the back post where Eri Pate nudged it into the net.
