May is National Nurse’s Month and to be a part of the celebration, area nurses are inviting the Tri-Cities area to “step” up and experience what it is like to walk in a nurse’s shoes. Designed to honor the nurses in our lives, in the community and across the country, the “Walk Like A Nurse Challenge” is an invitation to pick one day in May to walk 16,390 steps — the average number a nurse takes in one day on the job.
With no end to the unrelenting pressure on nurses, empathy and support are needed now more than ever. Many nursing professions continue to express burnout and stress from working through the pandemic. A recent study shows that 34 percent of nurses say it’s very likely that they will leave their roles by the end of 2022. Some 65 percent of nurses report they had been verbally or physically assaulted by a patient or a patient’s family member within the last year.
To participate in the Walk Like A Nurse challenge, set your fitness tracker and get moving to reach 16,390 steps on any day you choose. Document yourself completing the challenge. Take a photo, video, or screenshot of your step tracker. Then, share your video, photo, or screenshot on social media and share what it was like to walk like a nurse for one day. Be sure to use the hashtag #WalkLikeANurseChallenge
Your post should include your name, who challenged you (if anyone), why you accepted the challenge, and the names of three people you nominate for the challenge.
Continue to thank the nurses in your life through small acts of kindness. Small gestures such as a thank you note, a sweet treat, or just a simple “thanks for all you do” go a long way!
