Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
As the 2021-2022 school year winds down over the next two to three weeks, that can signal only one thing – tournament time for spring sports at the local five high schools.
Those tournaments get under way in earnest this weekend and extend into next week for baseball, softball, tennis, soccer, and track.
Regular-season records can be thrown out the door as I have said in previous Chatters that the regular season is just glorified scrimmages attempting to get the right seeding heading into the crucial time of the year – district, regional, sectional, and state games.
Taking a short glance at some of the tournament action, in boys soccer the Elizabethton Cyclones open up tournament play on Monday when they host Sullivan East at 6 p.m. The winner of that contest will take on either Tennessee High or Greeneville on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Switching to softball, in Class 1-A Hampton squares off with Unaka at 5 p.m. while North Greene takes on Cloudland at 6:30 p.m. All District 1-A games are played at Happy Valley High School.
The losers of Monday’s games will meet on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m while the winners will take the field at 7 p.m. Wednesday’s action will see the loser’s bracket final at 5:30 p.m. with the championship game(s) on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. with an If Necessary game at 7 p.m.
Class 2-A softball will see the Happy Valley Warriors and West Greene Lady Buffaloes open the tournament with all times yet to be determined. The games will be played at the higher seed.
The winner of Monday’s game advances to play South Greene on Tuesday with the championship game slated for Thursday.
In Class 3-A being played at Sullivan East, the Lady Cyclones of Elizabethton opened the tournament on Friday against Volunteer. The winner advanced to Monday’s winner’s bracket game at 7:30 p.m. while the loser plays on Tuesday at 6 p.m in a Loser’s Bracket semifinal.
Baseball action in Class 1-A is being played at David Crockett with Unaka kicking off the tournament at noon on Saturday against the number-one seed while Hampton is slated for 3 p.m. contest against the number-two seed which will be either U-H or North Greene.
The winner’s bracket game will be Monday at 6 p.m. while a loser’s bracket semifinal immediately follows at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday will see the Loser’s Bracket final at 6 p.m and the championship will be Wednesday at 5 p.m. with an If Necessary game afterward.
In Class 3-A  being played at Elizabethton’s Northeast Community Credit Union Ball Park, Friday’s action saw Sullivan East square off with Volunteer and the host Cyclones play Unicoi County.
The action continues on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Tennessee High taking on the lowest-seeded winner from Friday’s action and at 4 p.m Friday’s losers will meet.
Games will continue through Thursday of next week.
