Barbara Anne Langen Rimes, 87, Elizabethton, Tenn., was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in July 2021 and passed away Sunday, May 29, 2022, at Signature Healthcare of Elizabethton. She was born on December 13, 1934 in Jersey City, N.J., to the late John Henry and Anna Mae Del’Orme Langen.
Barbara graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Towson University, Class of 1956, and in 1957, married William “Bill” Martin Rimes in Silver Spring, Md. They moved to Gainesville, Fla., in 1963 and joined Trinity United Methodist Church. Barbara was passionate about volunteering in the Trinity Bookstore, singing in the Chancel Choir, assisting in serving communion during services, and participating as a Stephen (grief) Minister among other meaningful activities. She loved music, gardening, aerobics, butterflies and birds. Barbara was a devoted elementary school teacher at Martha Manson Academy from 1975 until she retired in 2001. After the death of her husband, Bill, in 1991, and her retirement in 2001, Barbara relocated briefly to stay with friends and family in Dover, N.H., and Winston-Salem, N.C.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Barbara was preceded in death by her sister, Andrea Ruth Langen Juers of Cape Elizabeth, Maine in August 2013.
Survivors include her brother-in-law, Dave Juers (Andrea), Cape Elizabeth, Maine; children, Julee Anne Rimes (Steve), Marietta, Ga., Andrea Lynn Rimes Jernigan (Bill), Johnson City, Tenn., and Martin Eric Rimes (Jen), Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandchildren, W. Christopher Jernigan (Marlena), Alexandru Matta, Patrick Jernigan, James Matta, Jais Matta, Clara Rimes, William Rimes and Jon Rimes; and great-granddaughter, Parker Grace Jernigan.
A memorial service will be conducted at Trinity United Methodist Church, 4000 NW 53rd Avenue, Gainesville, FL (352) 376-6615. Date to be determined. Memorial donations may be made to: CurePSP at www.psp.org or Friends of Elementary Arts, Inc. at www.fea_arts.org.
Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, Tenn., is serving the Rimes family.
