Dollar General Literacy Foundation awards the Betsy Book Bus a grant. This Summer Reading Grant provides funding to help with the expansion of summer reading programs.
Dollar General’s commitment to literacy began with J.L. Turner, co-founder of Dollar General. With only a third-grade education, J.L. was able to overcome tremendous odds and launch a successful retail business. As an extension of Dollar General’s corporate commitment to literacy, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in 1993 to help increase the functional literacy of adults, families, and children.
The goal of the Betsy Books Bus is to reach the at-risk students in the community and make a positive impact on summer reading regression. The grant will allow the Betsy Books Bus to fulfill one of our greatest needs, more books for ages ten and up. The grant will enable a continuous supply of books to this age group without the financial support to purchase books. The goal of Betsy Books Bus is to build the excitement of reading in the students of the Elizabethton City School district throughout the summer.
