Volunteers are needed for the upcoming Public Lands Day event at Hampton Cove Creek Natural Area Saturday, Sept. 17.
Friday, Sept. 16, volunteers are invited to take their time and hike into to the project location (circa 1900 cabin) in the highlands of Hampton Creek Cove SNA (precise location revealed to participants after sign-up). Please plan your hike to arrive at the cabin camp location by 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. The hike will take you up through beautiful Hampton Creek Cove SNA. From the parking area, you can take the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail or the Birchfield Trail. It is about 2.5 miles to the location and a moderate hike that relentlessly, but gently, gains elevation.
Upon arrival at the cabin, volunteers will be greeted by program leaders Ed and Arleen Decker. Ed has family roots in Hampton Creek Cove. Ed and his wife, Arleen, helped build the Cumberland State Scenic Trail. A cabin will be set up for volunteers, and supper will be provided Friday and Saturday evening. Volunteers will need to bring clothing, a sleeping pad, sleeping bag, breakfast and lunch for Saturday and anything you need to eat on Sunday.
Volunteers will be allowed to stay at the local cabin for Friday and Saturday nights in exchange for help repairing the cabin.
Saturday’s agenda includes helping Ed and Arleen with various projects they have planned for repairs on the cabin. This may include helping with setting windows, cleaning, painting and other chores. Those with carpentry skills are most welcome. This will be a day of work, ending at 4 p.m. After the Saturday of volunteer work, you’re welcome to relax and remain at the cabin overnight and leave on Sunday or you can hike out that evening. If you want to extend your trip in the highlands of the Roan, you can hike up to Yellow Mountain Gap on Sunday morning and then return to the parking area.
There is a $30 charge for the weekend, and to register for the event call Lisa Huff at 865-207-0138 or email her at isa.huff@tn.gov
