The Elizabethton Woman’s Club has presented scholarships to two Carter County high school students to honor deceased members of the club.
Alana Parsons of Unaka High School was presented with the Jo Voigt Memorial Scholarship. Alana was valedictorian her class and plans to attend Lees-McRae College to major in Exercise Science. She was an outstanding softball player for Unaka High, winning a number of All-Star awards.
During her senior year, she became a certified pharmacy technician. She was also an active member of the Key Club, Beta Club, National Honor Society, HOSA, FCA, and Pep Club.
Zachary Stephens of Happy Valley High School received the Gertrude Bishop Scholarship. Ms. Bishop was a longtime member of the club and served many years as chairman of the scholarship committee.
Stephens was also valedictorian of his senior class and will continue his studies at Dartmouth College, an Ivy League research university in Hanover, N.H. He took many academic courses in addition to his many extracurricular activities at Happy Valley.
Stephens was founder of the school’s robotics team, was co-captain of the track team, president of the Key Club, and member of the Chess Club and Tech entrepreneurship.
Stephens was named one of the Twenty Under 20 people to watch for in the areas of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in the Appalachian region. He will be concentrating on entrepreneurship education at Dartmouth.
Funds for the scholarship were raised from the annual Arts and Crafts Shows sponsored by the Woman’s Club. This year’s event will be held Nov. 11-12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Elizabethton Recreation Center.
