Richard M. Barker of 115 O’Brien Place, Elizabethton, today announces his candidacy for re-election to the Elizabethton City Council in the November City Election. Barker was previously elected to his initial term in November 2018.
He is the son of the late Sam M. and Betty Jo O’Brien Barker and the grandson of the late Edward J. (Joe) and Grace O’Brien, also of Elizabethton. O’Brien served as a city councilman from 1971-77.
Barker was married to Marilynn Pless Baker for 29 years until her untimely death in March 2014. He is the brother of Debbie A. Alexander, who is married to Joe L. Alexander.
Barker in seeking re-election said he is committed to seeking improved economic and commercial development within the City of Elizabethton while maintaining strong financial management and prompt response and action to civic needs and concerns. “The city is also on the cusp of seeking improved recreational initiatives and enhancements. It is also virtually important that we maintain and enhance our exceptional city schools system,” Barker said.
Barker is also encouraging a vote for each of the other three councilmen running for re-election. “Together, we have formed a cohesive group dedicated to progress and advancement for the City of Elizabethton,” Barker said.
The election is Nov. 8. Early voting is underway now.
