Singers from First United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, St. Paul United Methodist Church, First Christian Church, and Carter County Parish have come together to present the the Christmas cantata “Celebrating Christ’s Birth” by Lloyd Larson.
The cantata will be presented Sunday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church and is under the direction of John Bunn, Fred Goodwin, and Catherine Bunton Edwards.
Edwards, who is music director at First Baptist, said over 50 musicians are involved in the joint collaboration. “The glory of Christmas comes to life in this inspiring music. Through a blend of familiar carols and original song, this cantata speaks to all church groups. We are so happy to have this many churches represented and that we can come together to celebrate the season and our Lord’s birth,” said Edwards.
She and Bunn are directing the cantata and Goodwin is directing the orchestra. The accompanist is Susan Heaton and narrators are Greg Bowers and Lisa Bunn.
The groups have practiced individually on the cantata since early September, and have had four joint rehearsals.
“We are really excited about the venture, and hope we can do more in the future,” Edwards said.
First United Methodist and First Baptist as well as First Christian first came together this past Easter for a joint Maundy Thursday service.
Edwards invites the public to attend the joint Christmas service.
