Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Clarence Vaught Sheffield Jr., 80, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on February 1, 2023. His beloved son, Richard “Bo” Sheffield, who passed away on October 21, 2022, was no doubt rejoicing when his father joined him in Heaven. After meeting Jesus and reuniting with his son, Clarence surely sang Stroll Over Heaven to the top of his now healed lungs.
Clarence was born in Elizabethton to the late Clarence Vaught Sheffield Sr. and Glenita (Blankenship) Sheffield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard; his brother, Herbert Sheffield; and two sisters, Earnestine Italiano and Carolyn Pleasant.
Clarence was a jokester and loved being funny. He had such a big heart and would have given the shirt off his back to anyone that needed it. In fact, Clarence was known to pick up hitchhikers just to fellowship and befriend them. Above all, Clarence was a family man in every sense of the word and loved his family dearly. His wife was his princess. His joy lay in loving and making memories with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Clarence was a United States Army veteran, having served in the 82nd Airborne. He was a long haul truck driver in trade and a loyal and devoted member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church where he loved to sing in the praise choir. He had also served as youth minister of music and youth leader at Biltmore Baptist Church and choir director at Fellowship Community Church.
Those left to remember and cherish Clarence include his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Louise (Hart) Sheffield, of the home; two beloved daughters, Tammy (Daniel) Bishop and Rhonda (Michael) Hubbard, all of Elizabethton; his son, Timmy (Stephanie) Garland of Elizabethton; a daughter-in-law, Kim Sheffield of Elizabethton; his grandchildren, Jessee (Amber) White of Elizabethton, Katie (Tee) Blevins of Elizabethton, Stacey (Brittany) Sheffield of Bristol, Tenn., Casey (Michaella) of Elizabethton, Jake Hubbard of Abingdon, Va., and Colby Garland of Elizabethton; his great-grandchildren, Andrew, Eli, Easton, Nixon, Warren, Addie, Hope, Cooper and Elise; his brother, Gary (Ardith) Sheffield of Elizabethton; and a brother in-law, Tommy Pleasant of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A celebration of Clarence’s life will be conducted at 6 p.m. Sunday, February 5, at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Johnson, Pastor Mark Potter and Pastor Gary Roe officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service.
The graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, February 6, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jessee White, Colby Garland, Stacey Sheffield, Casey Sheffield, Jake Hubbard and Tee Blevins. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Humphries, Mike Hubbard, Daniel Bishop, Steve Ferguson, Mark Harris, John Kinlaw, Carl Roberson, Tony Jones and Norman Simerly. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Monday. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the 2300 hall nursing staff at Johnson City Medical Center, especially Diana and Jordan.
