The Hampton Bulldogs, having already wrapped up the top spot in the Watauga Valley Conference, delivered a message on Tuesday night at Van Huss / White gymnasium with an 89-61 win over North Greene.
The Lady Bulldogs (23-1, 6-1 WVC) – facing a depleted Lady Huskies squad – kept their eyes on the prize and came away with a 61-52 win.
The Bulldogs (20-6, 7-0 WVC) opened slowly with a 14-11 first-quarter lead, but sparked by senior guard Cadon Buckles, 26 points, Hampton put the pedal to the metal and took a 37-25 halftime lead and were not challenged the rest of the way.
“The bench played super tonight,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “(Geno) Carrico had nine points, Brody Hicks had 11 and he played well. Campbell got in some foul trouble but had 15 points. This is a tough conference and North Greene is well coached and you have to come to play every night.”
The ‘Dogs outscored North Greene 25-15 in the third period to open a 62-40 advantage going into the final stanza. Junior Dylan Trivett had eight points, with Carrico adding seven. For the Huskies (16-12, 4-3 WVC), Jason Britton scored a team-high 18 points, with Dennis Malone adding 15.

Hampton’s lead continued to stand at ten after the third period as the Lady ‘Dogs led 45-35 going into the fourth quarter. Guard Sonya Wagner scored a game-high 23 points for the Lady Huskies (15-14, 4-3 WVC) and she helped rally North Greene in the fourth period with a 14-4 run that closed NG to within five at 52-47 with 4:34 left in the period.
“We got a little lackadaisical in the fourth quarter,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Brandon Carpenter said. “We got away from what we were doing but the girls regained their composure and stepped up. We missed some free throws early on but down the stretch we made them.”
North Greene closed to within 53-51 with 54 seconds left in regulation but the ‘Dogs made their last six free throws with Macy Henry hitting four and Madison McClain two. Henry finished with 20 points for Hampton (23-1, 6-1 WVC) with McClain adding 14 and Linzy Jenkins finished with 10 points.
Grace Buchanan scored 12 points for the Huskies and Hannah Miller scored 11.
