After a cold start to the week, a beautiful Tuesday afternoon provided a great day for track and field at Joe Laporte Track for the Citizens Bank Invitational track meet featuring several schools from the area.
Local schools Elizabethton and Happy Valley had several athletes participating in various events, with strong finishes by each school.
In boys events, Jeriah Griffin claimed a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.64 for Elizabethton while teammates Nate Stephens and John Siepert finished fifth and sixth, respectively out of a field of 45 participants.
Happy Valley’s Colby McNabb and Ace Young finished in the top 10 with McNabb finishing seventh and Young rounding out the group with a 10th-place finish.
In the 200-meter dash, Elizabethton’s Jeremiah Norris took the top spot with a time of 23.14, with Stephens and Griffin claiming spots in the top 10.
Cooper Chinault and Cooper Jack finished with back-to-back second and third-place finishes in the 800 meter run behind Seth Wolfe of West Ridge.
Chinault turned around and took first place in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:57.83. Teammate Max Garner finished in second place, while William Snodgrass and Jacob Jenkins made top 10 finishes for the Cyclones.
Garner outran three other competitors in the 3200-meter run finishing in first place with a time of 10:44.68.
In 110-meter hurdles, Elizabethton’s Teddy Orton and Norris finished second and third, respectively, behind Lakeway Christian Academy’s Palmer McGuffin, who finished with a time of 15.01.
Moving to relay events, Elizabethton swept first place in the 4×100 meter and 4×400 meter while finishing third in both the 4×200 meter and 4×800 meter.
Field events saw both the Cyclones and Warriors having solid finishes in various events.
Elizabethon’s Mac Paulson, with a leap of 5-06.00 won the high jump with Happy Valley’s Young claiming second. The Warriors McNabb secured a fifth-place finish.
Young also had a strong showing in the long jump finishing in third place with a jump of 18-04.75.
In the discus finals, Elizabethton claimed the top four places as Landry Buckles toss of 137-06.00 was good for first place with Alex Hurley (132-07.00), Diesel Russell (131-04.00) and Zion Reddick (122-06.00) following behind Buckles.
Elizabethton’s Bailey Cannon and Seth Campbell claimed seventh and eighth respectively while Warrior thrower Bronson Norman finished ninth.
In shot put action, Reddick notched second place with a heave of 41-07.00 while Buckles secured third with a toss of 41-07.00. The Cyclones also secured spots fifth through seventh and ninth through tenth as Hurley, Campbell, Hayes, Cannon, and Hunter Franklin secured those spots. Happy Valley’s Norman finished eighth.
On the girls side of the meet, Kaiya Simmons from Elizabethton edged Ariyana Green from West Ridge to take first place in the 100 meter dash. Simmons time was 12.88. The Lady Warriors had a pair of runners finish in the top 10 as Josie Zeoli claimed sixth while Mylee Lyle finished ninth. Elizabethton’s Cara Carr finished off the top 10.
Simmons backed up her win in the 100-meter with another first-place finish in the 200-meter dash just ahead of Happy Valley’s Marcida Moore and Kaydence Carroll. Zeoli finished seventh for Happy Valley, while Carr finished ninth for Elizabethton.
In the girls 800-meter run, Elizabethton’s Jasey Hyatt crossed the finish line in 10th place while in the 1600-meter run. Lady Cyclone Helen Hackett picked up a second-place finish with teammates Grace Artz and Nigina Zooboeva finishing in eighth and ninth place. Lady Warrior Sellah Pickering claimed seventh place.
Happy Valley’s Moore picked up a first place in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.10, while Elizabethton’s Cadie Digby and Ella Edmondson finished third and sixth, respectively.
Happy Valley garnered first-place finishes in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, while Elizabethton took second place in the 4×800 relay.
In field events, Camdyn Garland took a second-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 4-06.00. Garland followed her win in the high jump by taking first place in the long jump with a leap of 14-05.50.
Lady Warrior Moore took third place in the long jump with Zeoli finishing seventh with a jump of 13-02.50.
Garland continued to shine in field events securing her third first place in the triple jump as a freshman took the event with a jump of 30-09.00. Happy Valley’s Carroll claimed second place in the event.
In the discus finals, Elizabethton’s Tatyanna Loughner took a fourth-place finish with a toss of 69-08.00 while Happy Valley’s Kaylee Miller finished fifth, Abby Galliher eighth, and Emma Chavis claimed 10th place.
Finally, in girls shot put, Elizabethton’s Jamira Smalls claimed a second-place finish with a toss of 28-02.00. Garland and Marley Lewis took fifth and sixth place for the Lady Cyclones and Tori Frakes added a 10th-place finish. Happy Valley’s Miller finished in seventh place in the event.
