Eight-time winner Jerry Peters would be a proud grandpa today; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren won three divisions of the 2023 Egg Fight. Matthew Peters took the adult division, winning over his sister, Laura Baird, from Shady Valley. Matt Baird, Laura’s husband, came in third.
There was a good crowd on Sunday with 32 entering the adult division. Last year there were 36 entries but it was an election year and more people seem to come in election years, especially those running for office. A beautiful afternoon, not too cool and not too hot, just right for an outside event.
Judy Williams, a long-time competitor, finished in the top 10 for the first time, and six-time winner Mike Scott came in eighth place. Hannah Colbaugh, who won three of the last few years, finished in 12th place.
Two local officials, Mayor Patty Woodby and Circuit Court Judge Suzanne Cook, were judges in the event. Both also were judges in last year’s competition. Circuit Court Clerk Johnny Blankenship is the longest office holder to attend the egg fight; he hasn’t missed in many years. The Easter Bunny was a favorite with both the young and old.
Colonel Sanders also made an appearance and entered the fight. I guess he better stick to fixin’ chicken; he didn’t finish too well in the event. Carson Peters & Iron Mountain members were present and entered the fight; Peters has been on The Voice and played at the Grand Ole Opry many times.
It was the 200th year of the Peters Hollow Egg Fight, but it was the 198th fight. The competition was suspended for two years because of COVID. Matthew drew the last number of 32, and moved his way up to first. It was his second win; he won the children’s division in 1995. In the children’s divisions, McKynlee Peters took the junior division, Madalyn Peters won the three-to-seven division, and Garrett Arnold took the first fight in the 0-3 division.
