Jesus, in Matthew 28:19-20 said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
In verse 18 of the same chapter, Jesus had declared His God given authority over Heaven and Earth. As a result of His authority, Jesus gives us what we often refer to as the “Great Commission.” In that commission to His disciples (Christians) Jesus lists three major directives that his followers are to conduct.
First Jesus said to go. In this we see the need to take action regarding the work that Jesus further outlines in his directive to the Church. Second, if we genuinely believe in Jesus as the Son of God and recognize His authority, then we must see the need to teach the lost of every nation of the salvation that is possible through Jesus the Son of God. This was another part of Jesus’ directive to His disciple (teaching all nations). It is certain that the souls of all men are valuable and need salvation (Romans 3:23, 6:23). As we study the Word of God, we learn that God’s gracious gift of salvation is only possible through Jesus. Finally, Jesus commanded that we continue to teach others to observe all His commands. These commands are important because obedience to them can lead the lost to Jesus and the continuance of teaching God’s Word leads the obedient to spiritual maturity. As Christians, we have these responsibilities. We can fulfill these responsibilities in many ways: we can teach one-on-one, we can teach in study groups, we can teach via the different media outlets that are available today, we also can fulfill this command through the public preaching of the Gospel of Christ.
