Contractors with the Cherokee National Forest, Watauga Ranger District, will begin work on NFSR 87, also known as Flatwoods Road, damaged in a 2019 flood. Flatwoods Road will be closed for repairs beginning June 30 from mileposts 6.56 to 12.95.
Little Oak Campground on NFSR 87G will remain accessible through Camp Tom Hollow Road from U.S. Highway 421. Forest Service staff plan to maintain access to Old Flatwoods Road (NFSR 87D) while this section of road is repaired.
Repairs to the road include installation of new culverts, road and ditch reconditioning and surface material replacement.
This road will use Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Roads (ERFO) funds from a flooding storm event in 2019. The ERFO Program was established to assist federal agencies with the repair or reconstruction of tribal transportation facilities, federal lands transportation facilities, and other federally owned roads that are open to public travel, which are found to have suffered serious damage by a natural disaster over a wide area or by a catastrophic failure.
