The Woman’s Club of Elizabethton presented scholarships to two outstanding seniors in the Carter County and Elizabethton School Systems at the end of this school year. The student selections were based on grades and contributions to their respective schools and communities.
The Jo Voigt Memorial Scholarship will be presented to Olivia Danielle Smith of Elizabethton High School. Olivia had a 4.0 grade point average and was described as having “wonderful communication, fantastic leadership, and superb analytical skills” by Melanie Hartley, counselor. Olivia was the only female student at the school seeking advanced STEM education at EHS. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, FFA, and ETSU’s Upward Bound program.
Olivia plans to attend Tusculum University and study environmental science with a major in political science.
The award was presented by Terry Cole and Treva Williams, members of the Elizabethton Woman’s Club.
Hailey King of Cloudland High School was the recipient of the Gertrude Bishop Memorial Scholarship. She was in the top ten percent of her class and worked hard to make the best grades said Shellie McKinney, school counselor.
Hailey obtained 50 plus dual enrollment hours through Northeast State Community College and was also working to get a National Registry Certification in Emergency Medical Technician and a State of Tennessee certification as an EMT.
She, too, plans to attend Tusculum University to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
In addition to her school activities, Hailey is active in the Roan Mountain community.
This scholarship was presented by Paula Bishop, chairman of the Scholarship Committee.
Funds for the scholarships were raised by the Elizabethton Woman’s Club Christmas Craft Show, which is held each November.
Both Jo Voigt and Gertrude Bishop, for whom the scholarships honor, were active members of the Woman’s Club and took part in the scholarship program.
