Robert E. “Bob” Hamby, 89, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late William H. and Minnie Hamby.
Bob was a U.S. Veteran, serving in the Air Force. He received his Bachelor’s of Science degree from ETSU. He retired from Mountain Home VA Medical Center as a therapist after a 40-year career. After retirement, he went on to work at the Elizabethton Golf Course. Bob was an avid golfer, a big UT Vols fan and a recipient of the Happy Valley High School All Watauga Conference Award. He was a great family man and a member of Central Community Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Hamby; sisters, Marie Bunton, Nell Stewart, Betty Jo Williams and Mae Odom; and his beloved dog, Winnie.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte Hamby, of the home; three children, Terri Hamby-Hager and husband Chris Hager, Karen Hamby Hughes and husband William “Eddie” and Bobby Hamby and fiancée, Melinda Chaber; grandchildren, McKenzie Hughes Miller and husband Matthew, Jared and Carli Hamby; two great-granddaughters, Kyndall and Charlotte Miller; sister, Maxine Woods; and several nieces and nephews.
A service to honor the life of Bob will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 6, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Todd Wolfe officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service.
The graveside service and committal will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bobby Hamby, Chris Hager, Matthew Miller, Jared Hamby and Jimmy Bunton. Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Hughes, Marvin Rogers and Jerry Elliott. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Friday. The family would like to give a special thanks to the entire staff of Abundant Christian Living, Johnson City Medical Center and Sycamore Shoals Hospital for all their loving care and support during this difficult time.
