William Thomas “Tom” Stephens Sr., 83, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. He was born February 27, 1940 in LaFollette, Tenn., to the late Edward Washington and Mary Frost Stephens. He had lived most of his life in Carter County.
Tom was a 1958 graduate of Elizabethton High School where he played on the Cyclone Football Team, and East Tennessee State University with a Degree in Chemistry. He served in the United States Navy. Tom was a retired Marketing Representative for Eastman Chemical. He was of the Christian Faith. Tom loved antiques and going to yard sales.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rebecca Dennis and Nancy Howell.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carol Boyd Stephens; four children, William Thomas Stephens Jr., Holly Springs, N.C., Heather Stephens, Greensboro, N.C., Edward (Jane) Stephens, Greensboro, N.C., and Holly (Michael) Shoun, Raleigh, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Hannah (Michael) James, Rachel Ann Stephens, Margaret McKinney, Jack Stephens, Charlie Stephens, Lilly Stephens, Macie Shoun, Parker Shoun and Mia Shoun; and his four legged buddies, Buster and Belle.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at the funeral home. Interment of the cremains will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Tom to the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter, 253 Sycamore Shoals Drive, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
